You can add your mailbox to Apple Mail, Outlook, Thunderbird, the Gmail app on your phone, or any other mail app. Everything you need is on the Mailbox page, under Use your mailbox elsewhere, in the Setup details card.
You do not have to set anything up to start using your mailbox. Open inbox on the Mailbox page signs you straight into webmail in your browser. Adding it to a mail app is for when you want your mail alongside your other accounts.
These are the six settings your mail app asks for:
Email address: your full address, for example you@yourband.com.
Username: the same full address again, not just the part before the @. This is the one people get wrong.
Password: your mailbox password, the one you chose when you added the mailbox. It is not your Noiseyard password.
Incoming (IMAP): mail.hostedemail.com, port 993, security type SSL/TLS.
Outgoing (SMTP): mail.hostedemail.com, port 465, security type SSL/TLS.
Account type: IMAP. POP is not supported.
The address and the server names have a copy icon next to them, so you can copy them instead of typing them.
Most apps ask for this on two screens, not one. The first screen is the incoming server and often just says Server, with no mention of the word incoming. Fill that one in with the IMAP values. The next screen is the outgoing server, sometimes called SMTP server. Same address, different port.
The name people see when you write to them. A new mailbox sends without a name, so your address shows on its own and a fan's inbox falls back to the part before the @. To add your name, choose Open inbox on the Mailbox page, then Settings, then Identities, then your address, and fill in Display Name. That covers everything you send from webmail. In a mail app the name is a separate setting, the one the app asked you for during setup, so change it there as well if you want the two to match.
Please note that:
Choose the security type before you set the port. Many apps change the port for you the moment you pick a security type, which quietly overwrites what you just typed. Pick SSL/TLS first, then check the port is right.
In the security type list, choose plain SSL/TLS. Do not choose an option that says accept all certificates. You do not need it, and it turns off a safety check.
On an iPhone, the outgoing user name and password look optional. They are not. Fill them in with the same address and password, or you will be able to receive mail but not send it. This is the single most common setup problem. On Android, the same thing appears as a Require sign-in box on the outgoing screen. Leave it ticked.
Choose IMAP and not POP. IMAP keeps your mail on the server, so the same messages show up on your phone, your computer and in webmail. POP downloads them to one device and can take them out of the others.
If sending fails but receiving works, it is almost always the outgoing settings. Check that the outgoing user name is your full address, that the security type is SSL/TLS, and that the port is 465. If your internet connection blocks port 465, try port 587 with STARTTLS instead. Some mobile networks and office networks do block it.
